Mike Carey

Mike read English at Oxford University, winning the David Duff Prize for original writing in both his freshman and final years and contributing regularly to the Cherwell, a student-run local freesheet. He taught media for ten years at sixth form and FE levels while developing his own creative projects (primarily in comics and film), before resigning to pursue writing full-time. His original graphic novel series THE UNWRITTEN has appeared in the New York Times bestseller list seven times, once for each of the seven collections to date, and was nominated for a Hugo Award in 2011 and 2012 as well as for 3 Eisner Awards in 2012.

Mike is also a regular writer for DC and Marvel Comics, both on series created by Neil Gaiman and on his own original series, THE UNWRITTEN, for which he is sole writer. He has written DC/Vertigo’s flagship title, HELLBLAZER for three years, and Marvel’s X-MEN/X-MEN LEGACY for six (including two company-wide crossover events and a third event, Age of X, on which he was sole writer across three linked titles). He has written story arcs for ELEKTRA, FANTASTIC FOUR and THOR, and adapted both Neil Gaiman’s NEVERWHERE and Orson Scott Card’s ENDER’S SHADOW into comics form for DC and Marvel respectively. His creator-owned superhero series SUICIDE RISK debuted in Spring of 2013 for BOOM! Studios, and he is also writing the wartime horror series HOUSES OF THE HOLY for the Madefire iPad app.

His series LUCIFER was nominated for five Eisner awards; it was also informally bestowed a Squiddie (the usenet-based comic fan award) in 2003 for best ongoing series, and was declared best foreign language title at the Barcelona comics convention in 2004. Mike's current original series THE UNWRITTEN has been a New York Times bestseller and was nominated for three Eisners and a Hugo. He has won both Ninth Art’s Lighthouse award (for best new talent) and the UK’s National Comics Award (for his work on HELLBLAZER).
