Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon

Born and bred in Derbyshire, Brian & Joseph (Joe) met at the tender age of 10 at school, started writing plays together at 14, and haven’t looked back since. Now both located in Brighton & Hove, Mitchell & Nixon have enjoyed a life-long friendship and a successful career as a comedy writing team in British TV, radio & theatre.

Their impressive cv includes comedy sketch writing for TV shows as diverse as The Generation Game, Jerry Sadowitz  and Live & Kicking plus co-writing on three series (2004, 2006 & 2010) of award-winning comedienne Jo Caulfield’s BBC Radio 4 show.

In the 1990s, Mitchell & Nixon formed a theatre production company called The Foundry Group ( and they’ve successfully produced and toured the UK with their plays, including  Spy, Moonlight over India, The Bargain, Metronome, Eurovision, Those Magnificent Men, The Opinion Makers, The Ministry of Biscuits (co-written by Mitchell with best-selling novelist Philip Reeve) and the multiple award-winning Big Daddy vs Giant Haystacks, set in the world of English wrestling superstars.

Now playing the West-End, The Shark is Broken (co-written by Nixon with actor Ian Shaw) has perhaps enjoyed such notable success because it took the plunge in telling the behind-the-scenes escapades of the cast of Spielberg’s blockbuster, 1975 film Jaws. When The Shark is Broken opened at the Edinburgh Festival in August 2019 it was an instant hit and obvious it should be playing to bigger audiences, but then the pandemic struck… Top theatre producer, Sonia Friedman spotted this play’s potential and quickly arranged for its current 2021 West End presentation at the Ambassadors theatre where it’s enjoying sell-out shows and splashy reviews:

“Did I mention waves? Get ready for this play to make some” – The Times,

“Three men on Jaws boat will have you hooked” – London Evening Standard

“A small-scale delight” – The Daily Telegraph

“Thanks to the writing and performances there are plenty of laughs on offer here”
The Arts Desk
