Like many others, the Ki team is already looking forward to spooky season - to curling up with a good book or film, snacks and blankets as the days grow shorter and colder. Keep reading for our book and film/TV recommendations for Halloween and autumn atmosphere. Note: this does not include any Ki writers on purpose, though there are many books on our list that fit the bill.
It’s so hard to pick only three books - spooky, atmospheric, gothic novels are my kryptonite. Alas, choices had to be made.
Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young: I love how Young makes atmosphere a character, and I can’t wait to reread this with a mug of tea on a rainy day.
The Woods All Black by Lee Mandelo: Literary horror on small communities, transness - and something uncanny in the woods.
A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher: Kingfisher is the queen of cosy horror, and this might be her best yet!
The Enchanted Castle by Edith Nesbit: The most frightening book I’ve ever read!
Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley: A story for reconciling with the dark side in all of us.
Cuckoo Song by Frances Hardinge: Scary and wondrous!
The Watchers: I loved the book, so very excited to finally see the screen version.
The Fall of the House of Usher: creepy and brutal, but full of literary easter eggs, yes please.
Wednesday: just delightful TV, featuring a (probably neurodivergent) goth girl
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: a perennial favourite.
Hereditary: horrifyingly effective.
Death Becomes Her: excellent fun.
Enjoy!
